The Shamrocks 12U continued their winning ways by capturing the 2002 Halloween Championship with a 4-1 win over the Washington Senators in the Championship game Sunday evening. The Shamrocks played flawlessly all weekend, only allowing two runs to cross the plate from their opponents; offensively the Shamrocks provided a hitting clinic, mixing singles, doubles, bunts and an inside the park home run, amassing 38 runs over the course of the weekend. On the mound for the Shamrocks, the pair of Brittany Black and Jessica Thomas collectively sent 64 batters back to the bench with strikeouts. On the receiving end of the pitches, catcher Christina Bumpus, gunned down all who tried to steal second and caught 5 foul tips to set down the batters on third strikes. The offense was spread evenly from the top of the order to the bottom. Doubles by Brittany Beam, Michelle Clohan, Seana Sullivan, Kelsey Green, Brittany Black, Jessica Thomas and Christina Bumpus, critical bunts by Stephanie Fedrigo (one with two strikes on her in the Championship game) and Kelly Miller, and an inside the park Home Run smash to the fence by Kelsey Green, provided for no relief to the opposing pitchers through the entire order. Defensively the Shamrocks were "Rock" solid with exceptional plays looking as though they were the norm. At first base solid performances by Jessica Thomas, Brittany Black, Brittany Beam and Colleen Carty, accounting for over 40 outs over the weekend. At third base Seana Sullivan was flawless, as she covered the bunts and hot ground balls with routine dispatch. At second and shortstop, Michelle Clohan and Kelsey Green allowed no openings for the opponents. Coverage in the outfield by Brittany Beam, Stephanie Fedrigo and Colleen Carty allowed no extra bases, as they routinely backed up the infield and each other, providing no holes for the opponents. Brittany Beam fielded a single in left field and fired a heat seeking missile to catcher Christina Bumpus for a routine put out at the plate; a run normally would have scored, however for the Shamrock defense, it was just another out. In the Championship game, Stephanie Fedrigo dove and came up with a line shot to short center field for the out, that would surely have been a hit against any other defense. As solid would define the defense, aggressive would define the base running. Multiple bases were stolen by Kelsey Green, Stephanie Fedrigo, Colleen Carty, Michelle Clohan, Brittany Beam, Kelly Miller and Seana Sullivan. Heads up base running showed that the entire team was well ahead of the curve going into the Winter break. The coaching staff of John Clohan, Jim Green, Zack Bumpus and assisted by John Fedrigo saw this as a true team effort, with every member providing critical components to the overall domination of the other teams. As the team enters the Winter break, they are not lacking in ability, desire, or execution in all aspects of the game. Over the winter this team of ten, will look to add two more players who can add some depth to this very talented group of young ladies. The Shamrocks finished the fall season undefeated and Champions in the two tournaments in which they competed; The First Responders Tournament and the Halloween Classic.
